How Knox County Gleaners Turned Surplus Food into Community Support

The Knox County Gleaners did some Urban Gleaning recently when Peter Otts on the Water contacted us to share 1,258 lbs of food that they couldn’t use due to the fact that they were closing for the season. We were thrilled they thought of us!!!

Our dedicated volunteers sprung into action and were able to share this bounty with several other area organizations including Homeworthy / The Landing Place, St. Bernard’s Soup Kitchen, AIO Food and Energy Assistance, and Come Spring Food Pantry!!!

Take a look at the lovely homemade whipping cream St. Bernards literally “whipped up” the next day for their guests – all because of the generosity of our community and the willingness to work together for the good of all!!

Then, they shared even more food with us that they were unable to use, this time from their freezers. And again, through the dedication and hard work of the Knox County Gleaners, we were able to pick up this incredibly generous donation, and spread the wealth to several other area organizations – including St Bernard’s Kitchen – who made the items they received a large part of one of their next meals!

In the photos below the bread for the sub sandwiches, the french fries, and the ice cream that tops the crisp were all donated by Peter Ott’s and rescued by the Gleaners!!!  Could you imagine if the restaurant had no other place to take it, and that food all got thrown away!?!

We appreciate the support and partnership of Peter Ott’s, as well as their extra work in ensuring this food made it to those who could use it, as opposed to the landfill.
