Gleaner

Description:

Volunteers perform various agriculture-related duties at farms and private homes in the Midcoast region.  These can include planting, weeding, and/or harvesting.  Duties can also include washing and packing produce for distribution.

The Knox County Gleaners also pick up donated produce from various farms and private homes for distribution at sharing tables in the Midcoast region.

Volunteers for the Knox County Gleaners need to be able to meet the physical requirements associated with the specific task assigned (varies regularly), and be able to work without supervision.  They should be willing to work in hot weather.  The ability be bend over is essential. They need to show up when expected (this varies upon the task) and to work until the tasks are completed.

Knox County Gleaners Distribution Lead

Title:

Distribution Lead

Description:

We are looking to fill a critical volunteer role within the Knox County Gleaners organization.  The individual(s) will shadow the current lead for the remainder of the 2026 season in the activities listed below, starting immediately or very soon.  We are looking for this person to replace the current lead in 2027.

  1. Pick up boxed produce at Erickson Field in Rockport every Wednesday morning during the season (late June through early November) between 7:30 – 8:00 am
  2. Bring this produce to the chiller on the grounds of AIO in Rockland to separate into seven shares for delivery to their destination sites.  Some judgement is needed to create equitable shares.  There will also be additional produce in the chiller from other farm partners that needs to be included into the various shares for distribution.  The seven distribution sites are:
  • St. Bernard’s Soup Kitchen in Rockland
  • Methodist Conference Home in Rockland
  • Rockland Library
  • Knox Hotel in Thomaston
  • Mountainside Community Cooperative in Camden
  • Vose Library or Come Spring Food Pantry in Union
  • Knox Clinic in Rockland

Lifting is required, usually less than 20 lbs/crate.  Note that lighter weights can be maintained by packing fewer items per crate and creating more crates for transport and distribution.

**The individual must be reliable as no-shows cannot be accommodated.**  Backup can and will be provided for emergency and/or planned absences.

The job could be split across two individuals who would work closely together and coordinate as necessary.

Mileage costs can be reimbursed if the volunteer chooses.

If you’re interested, please click the “Apply Today” button and someone will get back to you.
